Janelle started using Taliya's Combo Conditioner after having to shave her head several times. She had been treated with auto immune suppressing chemotherapy for over 4 years due to lupus. Lupus, chemotherapy, high blood pressure meds, prednisone and other heart medications took a toll on her hair. She had about an inch of hair when she started to use the product. In 2023 she had about 4-5 inches of new growth and decided to get microlocs in January of 2024. She now enjoys a head full of natural hair after having been told it would never grow back. She uses the product once weekly by applying it to her scalp and locs. She is no longer buying expensive wigs to cover her balding head. She is no longer depressed about the state of her natural hair. She shares her hair story to lupus warriors everywhere and encourages them to find their own kind of beautiful and rock it! The beautiful benefits are evident. She also gave some of the product to her mother who had severe thinning and her testimony tells of how this product also changed her hair. Read about her mom in Patricia's Hair Story.
Janelle gave some of Taliya's Combo Conditioner to her mom after seeing monumental results herself. Patricia was experiencing severe hair thinning due to age. Janelle gave some of Taliya's Combo Conditioner to her mom after seeing monumental results herself. Patricia was experiencing severe hair thinning due to age. SHe also dyed her hair black regularly and would not even consider wearing her silver hair due to how thin it was. She was concerned that her scalp would be highly visible. She started to apply the product once weekly. In about 3-4 weeks she began to see a difference in the texture of her hair. In about 60 days she could say her hair was thickening up. After 3 months of use she decided to not dye her hair anymore. This product thickened her hair to the point she was no longer concerned about her scalp showing and looking like she was going bald. The product also caused her edges to begin to grow back. After years of pulling due to the braiding of her hair her edges had broken off. Now they are about a half an inch long and still growing. She is extremely satisfied with her results just like her daughter, Janelle.
House of Timbuktu is the heartbeat of Wylene Hameed and her husband Yusuf Hameed. Their love for people, history and willingness to serve their community gives life to this vision. Their vision is working to feed the mind and to promote moral excellence through education. Their self-funded efforts have helped to assist and grow individuals, families and provide skills trainings to employ the under employed and unemployed in the unincorporated Fort Barnwell community.
In seeing the economic distress of the Fort Barnwell community and lack of support and resources they began to add to the lives of those who lived in the Fort Barnwell area. This included adding a playground to their front yard due to no parks or safe place for the children to play. This included training the underemployed and unemployed on skillsets that they are credentialed in coupled with job placement. In addition, they provided free food, clothing giveaways and programming on history for the community youth. They have volunteered to assist the elderly in home repairs, residential cleaning, emergency childcare and landscaping.
Their efforts continue as they grow and expand their community services.
At House of Timbuktu, we believe that everyone deserves access to quality community support services. We approach each client with compassion, respect, empathy, and strive to create a safe and welcoming environment for all.
We offer a range of community support services, including training and job placement, referrals, and historical education through hands on experiences. We offer our services at no cost to our clients. We are seeking to connect with other organizations that will assist in providing more services to the Fort Barnwell community that are not currently available. Our services are designed to meet the unique needs of each individual client or organization.
Founder, Wylene Hameed is interested in changing the appearance of nursing homes throughout North Carolina. This includes a focus on those in small communities. She has worked in a small community for eight years with out-of-pocket funding with little help and support from outside sources. Now, living in Rocky Mount, North Carolina we continue to sponsor our quarterly community dinners that are free to the public in the Fort Barnwell area. We have funded this through my position as an in-home aide and care giver. Due to my expertise in this field of work, I have seen many of my clients have to go into nursing homes when in home care was no longer appropriate. As a result, my concerns are the appearance of the nursing homes and the lack of joy in the residents who likely spend the remaining of their life there. In addition to in home care, I have worked in several facilities for years. I went to a facility to visit a friend that was in a nursing home for rehab. Although their stay was not intended to be long term, the visit pulled at the strings of my heart. The facility conditions and decor lacked a lot. I left with a deep desire to make some improvements that would spark life back into the facility with an undercurrent of joy for those who were residents there. I left with the thoughts that I had to do something to make it better for the residents and be their voice.
As a result, House of Timbuktu will be working on a plan to partner with nursing home facilities.
We started in 2012, when Meal On Wheel Program discontinued delivering meals to the rural segments of Craven County. We started preparing meals for the elderly and disabled individuals who depended on this program. Soon others wanted plates as well. As a result, we met Mr. Hewitt Kirkman and discussed his desire to create a park for the community of Fort Barnwell, NC. He needed help in cleaning and clearing a lot that their family owns. So, my husband and I volunteered to help clear the property for the park. Mr. Kirkman introduced me to his sister, Brenda Kirkman. I shared with her that we were planning to open a library and provide community services. She informed me that they owned two properties at 9505 NC HWY 55 West, Dover North Carolina.
She rented us the house and later the smaller building for an additional $1 per year, in order for us to be out of the weather as we feed the people in the community.
We worked with Mr. Kirkman on the park for two years when Brenda gave us opportunity to rent with the option to purchase the house and additional property for feedings at 9505 NC HWY 55 West address.
Part 2
Mr. Kirkman was not happy that his sister offered us ownership of the property. As a result, he advised that he was no longer interested in providing a park for the community at the site we had worked for free to clear and maintained. We continued to do the maintenance for two another years at our own expense. We used the adjoining property at 9511 to feed the community, create jobs and activities for our community.
This was the same year, 2016, our grandchildren came for the summer and had no place to go nor play in our community. So, we bought a swing set and other recreational playground equipment, for our grandchildren to play.
Our plans for the second building was to create a library, where people and families could come and play board games, drink coffee and tea, and sit back and talk about their experiences coming up as a child.
We considered a name for the adjoining property, our future historical library. Yusuf Hameed came up with House of Timbuktu, because it was one of the first institutions for learning. As a result, our community service business House of Timbuktu, LLC was born.
We had lots of work to do getting the place ready for our activities. We repainted the outside with colors that represent warmth. We also had to rewire the house, put in a water meter to get water to the house. We also updated the bathroom at 9505. As a result of the work we put into the home and library, we still have an outstanding balance, in a house we are no longer allowed to live in.
As we are still maintaining the vacant property, people would passed by and inquire about us doing work for them, and this is how Heavenly Touch Landscaping came into being, and because I am a CNA, Heavenly Touch Healthcare was born. All the funds that came in was put back into the business and all the activities we and programs we sponsor in the community. We also were able to pay $10 - $ 15 per hour, to those we hired and all our activities were free to the public.
In 2018, we were informed to discontinue the maintenance on the vacant property, by mail, and later we were informed that the families in the Mobile Park near us could no longer put any recreational toys in their yards. So, we decided to create a playground in our front yard. Our front yard was a hub for helping those who lived in the Fort Barnwell area. We had many activities including sponsoring struggling single parents to the movie, skating parties, the water park, and even helped families with financially.
When the pandemic hit, it slowed down lots of our activities, and we lost a few of our contracts.
Later In 2023, we started going to our council meetings and became aware of the Commissioner for the district we lived in. Later, Jason Jones called and he introduced himself and gave me a little history about the community. I informed him of our Juneteenth Celebration and invited him to our event and maybe welcome our guest speaker, Naeema Muhammad. He replied that he was busy with a wedding and it he had the time, he would. We were excited to be hosting another Juneteenth event. Brenda was well aware of these activities and even encouraged them as an asset to the Fort Barnwell community.
We had everything lined up and ready to go. About three weeks later, we were served with eviction papers. Remind you, we have been sponsoring/hosting these events for eight years, and Brenda has been my friend on fb over a year seeing the photos and posts about the activities we hosted. Due to the sudden eviction based on violating the provisions of an expired rental contract that had been replaced with the purchase contract. We were sited for the events that we hosted and the changes to the property that we had been given permission to make.
We abruptly had to move and cancel our event and lost all our deposits for our event.
We are now living in Rocky Mount, NC, closer to my job and our children in Greensboro, NC. We are now looking for a new location as we are trying to regroup and generate some more work and funds to start over again.
We taking this time to thank all the support that we got through the years, rather it was physical, by donations and volunteering, and most of all...our customers...We thank you.

When the community youth did not have a local park or safe place to play, Yusuf and Wylene purchased and installed this playground in their front yard.
The playground was often enjoyed by youth of the Fort Barwell community. They knew when they came to play they would also enjoy food and hear historical stories about the area they were growing up in.
Yusuf and Wylene Hameed hosted the community dinner every three months. At these free events they would share about the historical significance of the Fort Barnwell area, the services they offered to economically enhance the lives of those who lived there and offer free household items for anyone in need.
These youth came to a community dinner and enjoyed full plates and learned about the goals of House of Timbuktu to enhance their future through historical education and resources.
